Myopia etymology
Myopia or nearsightedness, where the axial length of the eye is too long for its refraction resulting in a focal point anterior to the retina. Near objects are clear and far objects are not.
"Why then is it called myopia or myein 'to shut' + ops 'eye'? Why not hypo + opia in contrast to hyperopia for farsightedness?" I ask as I squint my eyes shut to read these words on my laptop without my glasses.
